The Rotunda Interior Renovation at the University of Virginia has earned an Award of Honor in the Interior Design category from AIA Virginia. Glavé & Holmes Architecture served as the Interior Design FF&E consultant to John G. Waite Associates on this project.
Glavé & Holmes was responsible for the design and selection of the furniture and carpeting. The interior design team’s work not only included the selection of furniture and fabrics of a timeless aesthetic and durable construction, but also included custom design of new furniture and restoration of existing furniture in the Rotunda. Through careful attention to scale, function and flexibility, they selected furnishings that could accommodate the various events that take place throughout the week – from meetings to dinners to defending dissertations. To promote use of the Rotunda by students, the designers transformed the function of the Dome room’s mezzanine into a tucked-away study space. Contributing to the revitalization throughout, they adapted the large oval tables for connectivity and oversaw the restoration of 40 year old hand-knotted rugs to their original beauty. The team also added in a new system for hanging rotating artwork in the oval rooms and assisted with the placement of the art and donor wall.
The jury recognized 16 out of the 169 projects submitted for the 2017 Awards for Excellence. The design teams will be recognized at the Visions for Architecture gala on November 3 at the Hotel John Marshall as part of Architecture Exchange East.
