Glavé & Holmes Architecture is pleased to announce that the Carole Weinstein International Center at the University of Richmond has achieved LEED Gold Certification – only the second building on campus to earn this designation.
Our design team helped the University to meet the requirements with the following features:
- A freeze tank cooling system, which means abundantly available energy is used to freeze tanks of water at night and the ice is then used to cool the building during the day;
- 50 percent reduced water usage for landscaping;
- 92 percent of construction waste was reused or recycled;
- 10 percent of building materials are from regional sources, meaning they were harvested or manufactured within 500 miles of campus; and
- 100 percent of indoor spaces have adjustable thermostats and lighting; there are also windows in almost every room for natural lighting.

Glavé & Holmes is pleased to help make this contribution to the University and strives to continue building sustainably. This news comes on the heels of the U.S. Green Business Council’s report that that one third of the U.S. construction market could be green by 2018.
